If you were doing some last-minute shopping on Grafton Street in Dublin on Christmas Eve 2009, you may have stumbled upon some musicians busking to raise money for a local charity. Look closely and you'll notice among the buskers are an Oscar winner and a Grammy winner. In just under two hours, more than €2000 had been raised.

Three days earlier, Glen Hansard had revisited his busking roots and shown up on Grafton Street along with Noreen O'Donnell (a former member of Hansard's band The Frames) and multi-platinum-selling Irish artist Mundy, for an hour-long busk which raised €812 for the Dublin Simon Community. You can see them playing Mundy's big hit before the gardai shut things down. This inspired Glen to post to twitter and his other band's website, urging people to get out and busk for a few hours on Christmas Eve to raise some more money.

It is with a great deal of regret that I must inform everyone that The 2009 Weblog Awards are canceled.

Unfortunately the resources required to handle the load of voting (nearly 1,000,000 votes in 2008) could not be adequately provisioned. Even if the servers and bandwidth required appeared today it would be at least a few weeks before everything could be ready for voting.

This has always been a very, very labor intensive process, and in recent years with our success a very expensive competition to run. It's hard to have unlimited resources provisioned for seven days of voting. In the past we've had to provision expensive servers for several months to prepare for the crush of voting.

We really tried to solve the resource problems with new ideas (such as cloud computing) this year, but ultimately we were not able to make things work to our satisfaction. I'm very proud of the voting platform we built for The Weblog Awards over the years, and the quality voting experience we've been able to deliver. The one thing I will not do is compromise that voting experience.

Rather than run a competition that had a high possibility of technically failing, the more prudent choice seemed to be regroup and consider our alternatives for hosting these awards going forward.

Yay for shirtless Kyle Gallner!

Anna Kendrick has signed on to her first film since earning kudos for her breakout role in "Up in the Air."

The actress will join James McAvoy and Seth Rogen in the untitled Mandate dramedy formerly known as "I'm With Cancer," which has also found a new helmer in Jonathan Levine ("The Wackness"). He replaces Nicole Holofcener, who dropped out because of personal reasons.

McAvoy toplines as Adam, a 25-year-old who learns he has cancer -- a character based on the real-life experiences of Will Reiser, who was diagnosed with cancer in his mid-20s and successfully battled the disease over several years. Reiser wrote the screenplay, which marks his debut feature project.

Kendrick will play a young psychologist assigned to handle Adam's case despite her lack of experience.

Film begins lensing in next month in Vancouver.

Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Ben Karlin are producing. Reiser is exec producing alongside Mandate prexy Nathan Kahane. Mandate's Tendo Nagenda is co-producing.

Mandate International will be handling international sales at next month's European Film Market in Berlin.

Levine is best known for the Gotham-set coming-of-age pic "The Wackness," which he wrote and directed.

Levine is repped by CAA, the Nervik Co. and attorney Todd Stern.

Kendrick, who most recently earned a Golden Globe nomination for "Up in the Air," will next be seen in "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" and "Eclipse," the third installment in the "Twilight" franchise. Both films are set to be released this year.

Kendrick is handled by CAA and attorney Todd Rubenstein.

Naomi Watts brimming with happiness on Sydney break with her two boys

King Kong actress Naomi Watts couldn't stop smiling as she got down to the serious business of playtime with her sons Sacha and Sammy in a Sydney park.

And her sunny mood was infectious. Two year-old Sacha – full name Alexander Pete Schreiber – was giggling with glee as his mum tickled and chased after him.

Naomi, who has passed her light blonde hair colour on to her boys, is clearly enjoying being back on her home turf for her winter break.

The 41-year-old, who is based in LA with her partner Liev Schreiber, also treated Sacha and his one-year-old brother to a visit to the beach.

There was no sign of Wolverine star Liev, however. The actor is understood to be in New York for previews of Broadway show A View from the Bridge, in which he's appearing with Scarlett Johansson. uh oh

During promotional interviews for the show, he has spoken about how having children has affected his and Naomi's lives with regards to work.

"Kids make a big difference. You want to be there all the time, and when you're both working, it's hard," he told America's Time Out magazine.

"You gotta negotiate with each other and support each other in that regard.

"I think it's harder when both of you are really busy. Like in any profession, it's difficult. You want to make sure you have time to invest in your family. It's a challenge but it's worth it."

If you, like me, have been impatiently tapping your foot waiting for that damn Arrested Development movie to get made, I come bearing reasonably exciting news: The Bluths are headed to FX! Well, two of them are anyway. Jeffery Tambor will lend his voice to the Jan. 28 episode of FX’s new spy-spoof cartoon Archer, which co-stars his Arrested leading lady, Jessica Walter, as the domineering mother/boss of a secret agent.In the episode, Tambor plays a United Nations intelligence chairman who Walter’s Malory tries to woo for the benefit of her spy agency.Archer premieres on Jan. 14.

Helen Slater can rest easy. DC Comics, thanks to Scotland’s Sunday Mail newspaper, has let us all know that the prospects of a Supergirl movie starring country/pop singing sensation and mega-star Taylor Swift are utterly false. Many sites and publications, including this one, reported the rumor when it originally appeared just a couple of weeks ago. It seems now that those plans are certainly a moot point! Swift is set to star in her first feature-length role in this February’s Valentine’s Day.

If we hearken back to just a few months ago, there were rumors swirling that teen sensation Miley Cyrus would be playing the role of dominoed daredoll Batgirl in the next installment of the revamped, Christian-Bale starring Batman series. That has also panned out to appear unlikely (perhaps to the great relief of many?). Perhaps DC will reconsider if A) Swift does a halfway decent job in her upcoming film project B) Said project doesn’t completely bomb at the box office C) Swift continues her meteoric rise over the course of the next several months, including the upcoming Grammy Awards. For now though, fans seem more drawn to the prospect of a better Superman movie!

True Blood actor Alexander Skarsgard gives viewers some sexy wifebeater action on the set of his new movie, Straw Dogs, during an Extra interview in Shreveport, Louisiana.

The 33-year-old Swedish actor had nothing but praise for his beautiful co-star (and rumored girlfriend) Kate Bosworth.

“She’s amazing — Kate’s really amazing,” Alex shared. “It’s been a couple of tough weeks now, and she’s been pretty amazing, she really has.”

Break out the cigars and/or Serbian professional basketball players! Rockets star Yao Ming and his wife Ye Li are expecting their first child in July, a Chinese newspaper reported Tuesday.

The news was accidentally revealed by Ye's close friend Miao Lijie, who is her former teammate on China's women's basketball team, when attending a show at Shanghai World Expo on Monday. When asked why Ye did not come to the show with her, Miao said a "pregnant woman deserves less public activities."

Yao, 29, marked his marriage to longtime girlfriend Ye, 28, with a lavish August 2007 ceremony.

The couple hasn't decided yet where the baby will be born, but whether boy or girl, "lil' Yao" is sure to be one thing: creepy tall. Yao stands at 7-foot-6-inches, while Ye towers over most women at 6-foot-2.

I've just learned that Taylor Lautner is now being paid per ab. That's right, the 17-year-old co-star of the Twilight Saga franchise who's famous for his buff physique that is making girls scream when he takes off his shirt in New Moon, is getting $7.5 million for his next pic. The project is Paramount's Northern Lights, a Tom Cruise vehicle to be directed by John Moore (Max Payne) with a start date of April 1st. The logline says the pic is about "a gifted, young, aerobatics pilot who faces off with his controlling, billionaire father and falls in love with a gifted, female pilot). That shitload of money negotiated by WME now makes Taylor Lautner into the highest paid teenage actor around. (I'm told that neither Zac Efron nor Miley Cyrus have ever gotten a salary even close to that for their films. Amazing!)

Haven’t seen that one coming, really! But there she is, looking all airbrushed and very Miley… It was an interesting job for the Photo retouching dep – while everyone was photoshopped into a younger appearance. Miley’s airbrushing added years to her face. I know she’s relevant for the young population, but still, Miley Cyrus on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar?
